Dear Parents and Guardians of Broadview Public School, Welcome to Spring!! The warm weather this week meant we could finally open our play structures to our students, who literally swarmed them with excitement! It also means that we start planning for next year. My time has been greatly occupied these past few weeks with the staffing process. This process, which takes around 3 months from start to finish, is probably the single most important task I have as school principal. I have the task of placing teachers in teaching assignments and hiring any new teachers. I also decide school facility utilization, figure out timetables and consult with teachers and parents to create class lists. Our school is projected to grow again next year, so I will be hiring new staff. We’re also very fortunate in that we have been allocated another Vice-Principal. Every decision made throughout this process will have an impact on students, their learning environment, their achievement and their well-being. It’s absolutely critical that this process receives my focus and energy. If you’ve emailed me in the past few weeks, I do apologize for being a slow responder! School Climate Survey 2018 for Parent/Guardians - Open until May 11, 2018 The OCDSB values parental engagement. When parents share their ideas and offer constructive feedback, the school system is improved and students succeed. We are seeking your input regarding school climate. By completing our School Climate Survey for parents/guardian, your feedback will assist us in developing strategies to prevent bullying and to promote safe and inclusive schools for all students. The “OurSCHOOL” survey developed by The Learning Bar will be used across the OCDSB. It is anonymous, voluntary, confidential, and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. The parent survey is open now until to May 11, 2018. Use this link to access it: http://www.ourschool.net/broa18 All Ontario school boards are required by the Ministry to conduct school climate surveys of students, school staff and parents at least once every two years. More information about the survey is available on the OCDSB website and in the attached file. Dear Parents and Guardians of Broadview Public School, I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable March Break. We were in south Florida for the week enjoying the sun and time together. While not a hot week, it was sunny every day and the week gave us an opportunity to catch up and enjoy being together. It’s great to be back and we’re looking forward to the final 3 months of school. In my experience, these 3 months fly by. Broadview is a big school with a lot going on. I’ll do my best to keep you apprised of all the goings on! Principal for the Day I had the pleasure of sharing my job this Tuesday with William Haslett, a grade 6 student who was Principal for the day. William bid for this through School Council’s online auction in February. William and I patrolled the hallways, visited classes, made announcements, and supervised the yard. We also checked on the boilers and electrical room. Check out our Twitter feed for pictures of Principal Haslett in action! Thank you to William for a great day! Dogs on School Property A reminder to all pet owners that dogs may not be brought on school property. I’ve heard some reports that dogs are being tied to the school fence as well. Please do not do this. If you walk your child and your dog to school, please say good-bye to your child from the sidewalks around the school. Dogs are not permitted on any OCDSB school properties at any time of day. Thank you for this. Parking Lot/Driving Safely A reminder that the school parking lot is not for pick up or drop off of students. The small parking lot that is located at the southwest corner of the school is not for public use either. My office faces out on Dovercourt Avenue. There was a morning a few weeks ago where I saw several cars doing three point turns in front of the school following a drop off. While not illegal, these turns can be quite dangerous with oncoming traffic and should not be attempted on a busy street like Dovercourt. Finally, I thank you for being respectful of our neighbours. Please do not pull into private driveways to turn your vehicle around. They thank you for respecting this request. Toonie Tuesday - Education Foundation Fundraiser Thank you to our amazing community for contributing over $700 during this year’s Toonie Tuesday campaign. These funds will be used to help support students in need and their families around the district. Grit on the Pavement Our icy conditions this year meant lots of grit and salt were deployed throughout the winter. As we thaw into Spring, we’re finding that the paved areas of our yard are covered in grit - the small stones that are used throughout the winter to add traction. Our amazing Chief Joe is doing his best to look after the pavement until May when the street sweepers will be able to come and do a full clean up. Until then, I ask that you please use care when walking on the paved areas of our yard. We’ll ask the students to do the same through our morning announcements. Mr. Joe has been doing a great job of looking after the basketball courts and four square play areas - thanks, Joe! Class Placements for 2018-2019 In April, the Principal, with the advice of staff, begins the process of developing and refining class lists for the coming school year. A range of criteria are used, such as balancing the needs of children academically, grouping children appropriately for special education or English language learning services, matching teaching/learning styles where possible, grouping or dispersing students appropriately based on social/behavioural needs, and balancing the number of boys and girls in the class. This process is one of the most important decision-making tasks of the school year. As such, we work in a professional manner to achieve the best possible results for all of our students. If a parent feels there are important learning and/or social factors that should be taken into account for his/her child’s placement for 2018-2019, they are invite
