Dear Parents and Guardians of Broadview Public School, Welcome to Broadview Public School and thank you for sending us such lovely children with whom to work! A very special welcome to our families that are new to our community this year. This is the first of many messages that you’ll receive from the Principal’s office with updates on what’s happening at school. I post these messages on our website as well under the Principal’s Blog. Our startup has gone very well this year and we’ve been thrilled to welcome many new staff members. I hope you can make it out to meet your children’s teachers this Thursday at our Welcome Back Broadview event. We have two new Vice-Principals this year - Alli Hunter and Alison Boyd. I’m including a selfie of your admin team so that you can put faces to our names. Your Broadview Admin Team: Principal Paré, VP Boyd, and VP Hunter Broadview also welcomes Janett McPherson to the office as our new full-time office assistant. If you call the school chances are it will be Janett’s voice at the other end of the line. Welcome, Janett! Our school lobby has a wonderful display of all the faces of the staff of Broadview. Be sure to stop in and see it on your next visit to our school. Thank you to Mrs. Morris and Emma for making it happen. Home/School Communication I’ll be sending messages home via email regularly as new information becomes available. Thank you for taking the time to read these messages and thank you for sharing feedback with me. You can also follow what’s happening here at Broadview through our Twitter feed. Twitter users can follow @BroadviewPS1 and non-Twitter users can see our Twitter feed on our school website, www.broadviewps.ocdsb.ca. Our website also hosts our school calendar and a school council page sharing important council business. You can also email the school’s general mailbox - [email protected]. If we don’t have an up to date email address for you, please call the school’s main number and a member of our office team will happily update this for you. Voluntary School Fees Thank you to those parents who have voluntarily paid their children’s school fees. If you haven’t already done so, payment can be made easily through School Cash Online, cash, or by cheque made payable to Broadview Public School. School Learning Plan Broadview educators are focusing their professional learning this year on math. Specifically we are curious about how to help students improve their confidence when approaching a math problem, and how to boost fundamental skills such as mental math. Our goal is to see our students feeling confident when presented with math problems and for students to feel as though they are equipped with numeracy skills that help them to achieve numerical fluency. If you have input that you would like to share I’d be happy to hear from you. Orange Shirt Day Orange Shirt Day was created during the St. Joseph Mission Residential School Commemoration Project in Williams Lake, BC, in May 2013. Former student, Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, told her story of her first day at residential school when her shiny new orange shirt, bought by her grandmother, was taken from her as a six-year old girl, which prompted the realization that many survivors have similar stories. Schools across Canada will be commemorating Orange Shirt Day on Monday, October 1. Staff and students are encouraged to wear any piece of orange clothing, design their own ‘Every Child Matters’ shirt, wear ribbons or orange stickers, or wear any kind of orange clothing or decoration. If you would like to help send a message to Joanne Small-Greenall. Adults on the School Yard Keeping our students safe is a top priority for us here at Broadview Public School. We are also a community school and appreciate that parents and guardians enjoy dropping off and picking up their children in our school yard. In order to help us keep your children safe while balancing the community feel of our school,
