Dear Parents and Guardians of Broadview Public School,

Welcome to Spring!! The warm weather this week meant we could finally open our play structures to our students, who literally swarmed them with excitement! It also means that we start planning for next year. My time has been greatly occupied these past few weeks with the staffing process. This process, which takes around 3 months from start to finish, is probably the single most important task I have as school principal. I have the task of placing teachers in teaching assignments and hiring any new teachers. I also decide school facility utilization, figure out timetables and consult with teachers and parents to create class lists. Our school is projected to grow again next year, so I will be hiring new staff. We’re also very fortunate in that we have been allocated another Vice-Principal. Every decision made throughout this process will have an impact on students, their learning environment, their achievement and their well-being. It’s absolutely critical that this process receives my focus and energy. If you’ve emailed me in the past few weeks, I do apologize for being a slow responder!

School Climate Survey 2018 for Parent/Guardians - Open until May 11, 2018
The OCDSB values parental engagement. When parents share their ideas and offer constructive feedback, the school system is improved and students succeed. We are seeking your input regarding school climate. By completing our School Climate Survey for parents/guardian, your feedback will assist us in developing strategies to prevent bullying and to promote safe and inclusive schools for all students.

The “OurSCHOOL” survey developed by The Learning Bar will be used across the OCDSB. It is anonymous, voluntary, confidential, and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. The parent survey is open now until to May 11, 2018. Use this link to access it:

http://www.ourschool.net/broa18

All Ontario school boards are required by the Ministry to conduct school climate surveys of students, school staff and parents at least once every two years. More information about the survey is available on the OCDSB website and in the attached file.

School Yard - EDP

Our school hosts an Extended Day Program as of 7 am in the morning and until 6 pm in the evening. Outdoor play is an important part of the program, particularly on warm sunny days! While I don’t want to discourage families from picking up their children on the school yard, I do thank you in advance for leaving the school property no later than 4:00 pm. This helps our EDP staff supervise the yard safely and efficiently.

PA Day - No School or EDP

Our staff is participating in professional development this Friday, April 27. As a result our school will be closed for the day.

International Baccalaureate Program Implementation Plan - Merivale High School - Open House - Merivale High School:
Monday, April 23rd 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is planning to introduce a new International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Merivale High School beginning in the Fall of 2019. This would be the second IB program in the district; there is currently an IB program at Colonel By Secondary School.

In order to best serve the community, we would like your thoughts about some of the implementation issues for the new program. Specifically, decisions need to be made about three things:
1.     Attendance boundaries for the two IB programs;
2.     Semestering versus non-semestering at Merivale High School; and
3.     School start time at Merivale High School.

We have prepared some background information on each of these issues, which you can access from the links below. We will be holding two open houses where these issues will be discussed in more detail. We are also collecting feedback though our online discussion forum. We encourage you to learn more and share your thoughts with us. The consultation period runs until May 1, 2018. You may provide your feedback on the questions through "share your thoughts" until May 1, 2018.

Dogs on School Property

A reminder to all pet owners that dogs may not be brought on school property. This includes the school parking lot areas, play areas, and in our buildings.

Mid Day Student Pick Ups

Many of our students need a pickup during the day for events such as appointments, hockey tournaments, or family trips. The school wants to accommodate these requests as efficiently as possible. In order to help us do so, please ensure the following:

  1. Send all absence notices via email to [email protected] or call our 24 hour attendance line: (613) 728-1721.

  2. If the adult picking up the student is not a parent or guardian, please provide the office with appropriate authorization in advance of the pickup. i.e., a note/email/phone call  indicating who you are, who the child is, and who will be picking up your child.

  3. If sending the teacher a time for release, allow travel time for your child to get to the office. E.g., If you need them in the office, at 2:30 and are sending the teacher a note, request a release from class at 2:25.

For pickups between 3:30 and 3:45, please try to have this arranged in advance as much as possible to avoid having to wait for your child. If your child is in EDP or an after school camp, please make sure you contact these programs directly to indicate that your child will not be in attendance.

Parking Lot/Driving Safely

A reminder that the school parking lot is not for pick up or drop off of students. The small parking lot that is located at the southwest corner of the school is not for public use either. I thank you for being respectful of our neighbours. Please do not pull into private driveways to turn your vehicle around. They thank you for respecting this request.

Class Placements for 2018-2019 - Info due this Friday, April 27

In April, the Principal, with the advice of staff, begins the process of developing and refining class lists for the coming school year. A range of criteria are used, such as balancing the needs of children academically, grouping children appropriately for special education or English language learning services, matching teaching/learning styles where possible, grouping or dispersing students appropriately based on social/behavioural needs, and balancing the number of boys and girls in the class. This process is one of the most important decision-making tasks of the school year. As such, we work in a professional manner to achieve the best possible results for all of our students. If a parent feels there are important learning and/or social factors that should be taken into account for his/her child’s placement for 2018-2019, they are invited to send this information to me by Friday, April 27, 2018. Information should be sent to [email protected] with the subject header “Class Placement Information”. The content of the note should only reflect the learning needs of the child and not be a request for a certain staff member. Please refrain from discussing class placements with staff to avoid putting them in an awkward position.
