Dear Parents and Guardians of Broadview Public School,

We are well into mid-October and our school is a busy, happy place of learning. Our staff had an excellent day of learning on the October 5th PA Day with a focus on math fundamentals. They’ve just completed IEPs and are currently busy working on progress reports, which will be arriving home on in less than a month (November 8). Our Math club, Games Club, BEST Club, Puppetry Club and Robotics club are up and running and our students had an incredible showing at the regional cross-country meet last week. Our school bands are working out their squeaks and learning new songs in anticipation of performing them for you. Our student council is preparing for a dance for intermediate students on October 31st and we have a team preparing for Remembrance Day. Many of our young athletes are progressing to the district-wide meet. Way to go Bears!! You make our school a vibrant and exciting place to learn and work!

Adults on the School Yard

In our last communication we included the guidelines below regarding access to our school yard. Please be reminded that parents and guardians are welcome to enter our school yard no sooner than 3:45 at the end of the school day. Staff and students use our yard as a learning space right to the end of the day. The number of adults that are entering our school yard prior to 3:45 makes it more difficult for our staff to ensure the safety of our students as we are not able to distinguish between friendly faces and strangers. Thank you for respecting this important guideline.

Keeping our students safe is a top priority for us here at Broadview Public School. We are also a community school and appreciate that parents and guardians enjoy dropping off and picking up their children in our school yard. In order to help us keep your children safe while balancing the community feel of our school, thank you for respecting the following guidelines:

  • Supervision begins at 9:00 am. Parents are asked to take their children to the back of the school where they can say goodbye and begin their day. Once the bell rings at 9:15 the yard should be cleared promptly so classes can use the courtyard for physical education.

  • Parents and guardians should not be in the school yard prior to the 3:45 dismissal bell. We use the courtyard, play structure and field for physical education programs and need to keep this area clear.

  • Parents, guardians and their children need to clear the yard by 4:00 so that our students in EDP and students participating in extra-curricular activities can have full access.

  • Parents and guardians should not enter the kindergarten area without a staff member. The kindergarten gate must remain closed at all times to avoid confusion for our little ones.

Student Pickup Safety

To ensure the safety of our students, all student pickups at school by adults must be done through the office. Students need to be signed out by an adult who can be verified by the school office staff as being authorized to do so. Pickups on the yard or at the bus will not be permitted unless the adult has been authorized by office staff in advance. If your child is going to be picked up by an adult that is not known to the school or an adult not identified as an emergency contact, please let us know, as we only release children to adults who have been authorized by parents and guardians.

Photo Day

Say cheese! Our school photo days are on Wednesday, October 24th for students in kindergarten to grade 4, and Thursday, October 25th for students in grades 5-8.

Broadview is Allergy Aware

The health and safety of our students and staff is a top priority at Broadview. For some of us, food allergens are a life-threatening concern. To that end, we remind you that no nut products should be coming to school under any circumstances. Your child’s teacher may have communicated a list of other allergens that may not be sent to your child’s class in addition to nut products. In order to ensure the safety of our students, please do not send food to school to share with the class (e.g., birthdays, Halloween, etc.) unless a staff member has coordinated this with you. Food sent without permission from the classroom teacher will be returned or disposed of. Your cooperation is most appreciated!

Individual Education Plans (IEPs)

These went home on Tuesday, October 16th. If you were expecting an IEP for your child and have not seen one, please contact your child’s teacher.

No Dogs on School Property

Dogs should not be on school property at any time of day or evening.

Immunizations (Students in Grades 7 and 8 Only)

Ottawa Public Health will be at our school on October 23 and 24 to administer vaccines for students in grade 7. Please see the linked information form.

International Baccalaureate Program (Grade 8 students)

A representative from the International Baccalaureate Program will be coming to Broadview and presenting to all Grade 8 students on Oct 30th. Parents interested in the program are also invited to attend one of the Open Houses for the school within their geographic boundary. For Colonel By that will be November 20th and 28th, and for Merivale it will be November 21st and 27th. The information at all sessions will be the same.

Halloween - October 31

The focus of Halloween at Broadview will be a fun day for the students and teachers on Wednesday, October 31. If students decide to wear a costume to school please follow the guidelines below. Please note that this is optional and students can also dress in orange and black if they choose to.

Costume Guidelines:

  • Please make sure the costume is put on over top of clothes.

  • No masks please. Students need to be able to see clearly and breathe easily.

  • Costumes need to be easy to walk and play in for the fun activities we have planned.

  • Weapons are not to be any part of the costume.

We hope you have a Spooktacular Halloween!

Parking Lot

A reminder to all parents and guardians that our parking lots are reserved for staff and are not suitable locations for pick up and drop off of students.

Please refer to the attached map for ideal pick up and drop off locations around the school. Please note that Broadview Public School does not have a dedicated pick up/drop off lane. Our main parking lot drop off lane is reserved for OSTA vehicles only. As many students walk through this lot, pickup and drop off by the community is not permitted outside the hours of

8:30 - 4:15.
