Community Engagement

One of the goals of BPS School Council is to foster a sense of community. The Community Engagement Committee works together with staff, students, and parent volunteers to build awareness, connection and engagement between our BPS families and students and the wider Ottawa community. This aligns with two of the three key objectives of the OCDSB’s Strategic Plan (Building Brighter Futures Together, 2019-2023) – Creating a Culture of Caring, and a Culture of Social Responsibility.

Specifically, the Community Engagement Committee helps to organize and support activities and events that bring awareness to and collect donations/ raise funds for community charitable organizations as well as our sister school, York Street Public School, a K-8 school in lowertown with limited capacity for fundraising. Funds are also allocated to Broadview students/families in need.

Community Engagement Activities include:

  • Scare Hunger Food Drive (Halloween) - Organized and run entirely by an intermediate teacher/class that mentors a primary class, and also with support from social justice student committees including the Carebears.  All proceeds are donated to the Caldwell Family Centre.
  • Winter Clothing Drive (November) - A primary class creates awareness throughout the school (via posters and announcements) and helps to sort through and organize donated items along with parent volunteers.  Donations are given to York Street Public School and the Snowsuit Fund of Ottawa.
  • Holiday Hamper Drive (December) - A junior class creates awareness throughout the school (via posters and announcements) and helps to compile and organize donated items along with parent volunteers.   Donations are given to families at York Street Public School.
  • Bringing awareness to our community of the inequities that exist in our public school system.
